Dear colleagues:

As most of you already know, instructors of Science courses will no longer be evaluated using a Scantron paper form. Instead, students will be surveyed using a new on-line system, CoursEval, specifically designed to deliver and complete instructor evaluations. The system is housed on a secure server located on the UBC Campus and student submissions are stored without any personal data (e.g., name, std num) to ensure confidentiality. (For more information go to the e-learning website, www.elearning.ubc.ca, and choose CoursEval from the menu left hand side.). We will continue to evaluate GTAs using the old TA Scantron form for this term.

The Science Teaching Evaluation Survey for course sections ending in April 2008 is now available. Your students have been asked through separate e-mail to complete the teaching evaluation survey on the CoursEval website, https://eval.olt.ubc.ca/. Students log into the site using their CWL. The teaching evaluation survey consists of the required six University module questions and an opened ended comment question. (For more information on the new senate policy governing the student evaluation of teaching and the University's question module, please consult www.vpacademic.ubc.ca)

Please remind students (in class and through any web presence your course may have) of the importance of teaching evaluations and encourage them to participate.

Please direct any questions regarding the teaching evaluation process to teacheval@science.ubc.ca

Sincerely,

Ian A. Cavers
Associate Dean of Science
