Keith Hoyle
Jan 1946 - 20 Mar 2006
This Website is devoted to the memory of Keith Hoyle,
who left our company peacefully just over two weeks ago
at the time of this writing. As someone said at his
wake last Saturday (1 April - Keith would've liked that),
"When a man like Keith dies, it's like watching a library burn."
For me, that says it all; but, like most academics,
I can't resist embellishing. It helps me process
the unacceptable fact of his absence.
I reckon I am not alone in this, and now that the wake is over,
ongoing opportunities are scarce. So I have set up this site
and the associated wiki (see below) where anyone with
words or pictures or sound bytes or anything else that can fit
onto a computer is welcome to add their contribution to this
collection.
I'd also like to host an electronic photo album, if people are
interested in sending me image files. Sadly, I have only a few
of my own. Here's an example (click on the small "thumbnail"
image to get a giant version):

Just click on the above heading to get there.
So far there is only my first few words, but it will grow.
If you are unfamiliar with the workings of wikis, just go to the
mediawiki Main page
and follow the link to
"What's a wiki?"
to learn more. A famous example is the
WikipediA,
probably the world's most encyclopædic encyclopædia,
which was built entirely by people like us who came, saw, said,
"Hmm, I could improve on that," and did. Unless it becomes
necessary to protect some parts, everything on a wiki
is open to adding, editing, revising or deleting by everyone
who visits the wiki. Inappropriate changes can be reverted
with relative ease, so "vandalism" is pointless. This combination
has been proven miraculous, but it needs the impetus of a few
initial enthusiasts to get started, for obvious reasons.
I ask only that you keep anonymous editing/posting to a minimum;
you can easily register yourself and log in so that your immortal
words will be properly attributed. But I won't require registration
unless signs of abuse crop up.
Images and sound are also welcome, up to a few MB in size,
but I don't know yet how gracefully the wiki accepts uploads.
In a pinch (or if you'd like to add something to this page)
you can send me an Email attachment or a physical CD and I will
try to incorporate it to our mutual satisfaction. No Micro$oft-only
media, please.
