| People decide what they want to believe and then go looking for excuses. The most powerful influences on science and technology are not the Nobel prizes and great scholars, but TV and movies like Star Trek, Star Wars, X-Files and Phenomenon. Maybe also science fiction novels, but they only reach people who can read. You can't tell me Ronald Reagan and his cronies launched the SDI because they believed it would actually work!
