True democracy, with freedom and justice for all, does not exist. It cannot exist. It is an ideal toward which we struggle, with eternal vigilance and personal sacrifice, beset on the left by those who point out how little progress we have made, on the right by those who deny that it is even to be desired, and on all sides by corrupt cynical manipulators who could care less. They are not helping. True science, in which we seek only to understand what is the case and to share our insights with others, does not exist. It cannot exist. It is an ideal toward which we struggle, with eternal vigilance and personal sacrifice, beset by humanists who point out that science has always been a political tool, by technologists who think it should be, and everywhere by corrupt cynical manipulators who could care less.
