| Last night I started reading Richard Bach's new book; this morning I gave a ride to a hitchhiker with a French accent who declared to me, `July was the best month of my life.' When I asked why, he said, `Because it was the 24th anniversary of my second suicide attempt, and I am so happy to still be alive.' (I think there were some other reasons too, but that was the central issue.) I remarked that we usually ask too much of life, and that `to still be alive' ought to be enough to fill anyone with delight. We were both teary-eyed when he hopped out by the SUB.
