from PHYS 210 WIKI

Ask for help. Give advice. Exchange ideas.   But no copying!   (We will know.)

Also, no anonymous posting, please!

Please add new material at the bottom (chronological order) unless you are annotating something earlier (further up).

Exception: As this page grows, I will take completed parts (like PHYS 210 ASSIGNMENT 1: wiki editing) and put them on a page of their own, so that you won't have to scroll down over a lot of material you've seen before to get to the juicy new stuff. -- Jess 10:59, 5 September 2008 (PDT)

Note:

A wiki is not a blog!

OK?

I have tried in many courses to get a wiki going and usually failed. I'm keen to understand why this is so difficult. Part of the problem is, of course, that it is hard to see how one's contribution to a wiki will be evaluated for (e.g.) "participation" credit. I don't blame people for being concerned about this; learning is only partly for fun. Another part is that people don't like to "undo" other people's work, lest it be interpreted as dismissive or insulting. Perhaps one antidote for this problem would be to emphasize the fact that all changes can be "undone", so no erasure need be permanent. In large famous wikis like the WikipediA it is amazing how rarely one encounters a ko (a term from the game of go in which the two players could go back and forth indefinitely in a battle over one space on the board).

So this year I am introducing the wiki as part of the first homework Assignment. Later we might devise a "class project" that uses it in the intended way. Suggestions welcome -- the more specific the better! -- Jess 12:05, 11 August 2008 (PDT)
