10 March 2020:
"Free-for-All" Discussion
Feel free to add your thoughts here!
You might want to revisit our previous "free-for-alls" to harvest some ideas.
AGENDA ITEMS
- The Current Events group that meets in the downtown Nanaimo Public Library 10-12 AM on March 12 will feature a discussion of a book by Kate Raworth, ”Doughnut Economics: 7 Way to Think Like a 21st Century Economist”. This might be good reading for our group too. Comment from Jess: I have the book from the Library; I find it self-congratulatory, poorly written and off-putting. You may prefer this video, the condensed presentation at Kate's website or (if you can tolerate scholarly papers) her OXFAM paper from 2012.
- The Democratic primaries in the USA may capture our attention this month. Jess sees the situation as hopeless. What do you think?
- The Balanced Ballot (or Negative Vote) may offer Americans some relief from the two-party duopoly. It will probably take years to catch on.
- A hopeful item: Banks holding $47 trillion assets sign up to climate action.
- It's unlikely we will avoid discussing the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated stock market crash. Let's just try to avoid hysteria. :-) Here is a nice tutorial on Exponential Growth and the Logistic Curve. It reassures one to know that the number of cases will never grow to over 7.5 billion. ;-)
