Working in Groups

All assignments will be completed and handed in as a group of about 3-4 students. We'll sort out the groups in the first few lectures.

Do not underestimate the importance of working in a group! This is real life, this is what happens when you graduate and get a job. I've been in industry for almost 6 years, and I've been a teaching assistant for several classes, including an Engineering Physics lab which required extensive teamwork to deliver the final project. All work is done in a group.

When you go out and get a job, you'll have to work with whoever is there. You don't get to choose your co-workers. You don't have to love your other team members, but you do have to learn to get along and work together. From my past experience, I've seen that the brightest individuals usually do not make the best projects if they don't learn to cooperate.

If you finish "your part" early, then help out your team members, don't sit around twiddling your thumbs. Please be understanding, your fellow students are busy individuals, and some have many other problems to deal with outside of class that you may not have to. If you're fortunate enough to be smart, fast and problem-free, then you should use your good fortunate to help out the less fortunate.

And try never to let your ego get in the way. A mediocre idea that is well executed is better than a great idea which never gets finished. If the group has decided on the way to do something, even if it's not your way, you should work with the group to the best of your ability. (Unless, of course, it is completely and absolutely wrong. Come speak with us then).
