5.2 Undergraduate Facilities

Please direct comments to Matt Choptuik.

Undergraduate access to the departmental servers is provided through approximately 35 X-terminals located in two rooms in Hennings. In addition, the Department has a 12-seat lab equipped with NT machines. These facilities are heavily used and additional stations are clearly needed. Lab space for an additional 32 seats has been identified, although it is not yet clear what type of equipment will be installed. On the basis of typical usage of the current facilities, X-terminals (or cheap PCs running as X-terminals) would probably be the most cost-effective solution, again, particularly when software licensing fees and system administration costs are taken into account. If this route is taken, then a new terminal server, capable of serving both Unix and Windows applications, will be a high priority. Approximately $100,000 would be needed for the new equipment (cf. 2001/2002 Academic Equipment Proposal).
