Experimental Runs

Muonic hydrogen research at TRIUMF has evolved for over a decade, making continual progress in improving the measurements and understanding the physics. Of nearly a dozen series of experimental runs performed up to now by the Collaboration, some of which have or will have resulted in Master's, as well as Ph.D. theses [179,30,199,203], the runs analyzed for this thesis are the first two with tritium used in the target, which are summarized in Table 4.1.

Table 4.1: Comparison of Run Series

Run Au foil Gas Si Detector MWPC Main goals
(date) spacing diffuser1 Active area Thickness imaging Physics
Series I 39.0 mm System 600 mm2 150 $\mu $m yes Commission
(Nov-Dec 93)   2       $\mu t$ emission
Series II 17.9 mm System 2$\times$2000 mm2 300 $\mu $m no Production
(Jul-Aug 94)   3 (2$\times$69.5 mm2)2     TOF fusion

1 See Section 3.2.2 the for description of diffusers.
2 Each detector had a Cu collimator with an opening of 13.9 mm$\times$50 mm.
